Teachers and school heads all over Region IV-A received Energy Ed with warm welcomes despite the heavy rains on August 29, 2017 at Meralco Multi-Purpose Gym. 73 elementary schools and 8 integrated schools attended the event and were awarded with the Energy Ed kits. The Energy Ed Kit is a set of learning resource materials, in a form of flashcards, designed to introduce energy concepts to K12 students. 1000 kits were produced by One Meralco Foundation in 2017 for distribution to DepEd schools. During the kit distribution activity, Ms Luchi Flores, Executive Director of the Coalition for Better Education and One Meralco Foundation’s implementing partner for this program introduced the Energy Education Program. This was also followed by a short discussion on the use and importance of Project/Problem-Based Learning (PBL), one of the key learning strategies used in the development of the flashcards. Teacher-authors Michael Morella and Mona dela Cruz shared experiences and best practices on how to use the cards inside the classroom. Ms Mona went to the crowd and started asking the teachers a few questions that can be found on Knowledge Cards. These sent the crowd into bursts of energy and laughter as they tried to best each other to get the right answer. Mr Neil Rara, Project Officer of One Meralco Foundation expressed that the Energy Ed Program is Meralco’s way of expanding its coverage to more schools in the region. Before there were only a few schools reached through the School Electrification Program by the company but through Energy Ed, OMF is able to impart the importance of energy education and energy efficiency to more students and schools across the country. Energy Ed looks forward to reaching more schools over the country within the next few months.
